On April 15, 2012, Ms. Johana Ravelo (a senior in the Department of Politics and International Relations and Student Associate of the Middle East Society) was presented with a $750 Student Service Award, recognizing her outstanding efforts on behalf of the Middle East Society. The Award also recognizes a student's high academic achievement and continuing interest in Middle Eastern affairs.
Segio Carmona, Staff Writer for the Sun Sentinel, reported on the November 4th event. The story was subsequenly picked up by a number of other news outlets including the Chicago Tribune, the Hartford Courant, and the Orlando Sentinel.
Ted Deutch who spoke to the Middle East Society in 2009, and at the time was a Florida State Senator (D-30), was elected (on April 13, 2010) to represent the 19th congressional district of Florida in a special election to fill the seat vacated by Robert Wexler. On November 2, 2010 Congressman Deutsch won reelection to the House of representatives.
